Cave of Harkadio

The Charkadi cave is located between Megalo Chorio and Livadia, in a volcanic lava area, 3.5 km from the harbor. With the excavations carried out by the Museum of Geology and Paleontology of the University of Athens in collaboration with the Museum of Natural History in Vienna, 15,000 bones of 40 dwarf elephants, 120 to 150 centimeters in height, were found in the Harkadio Cave and belonged to the Palaeloxodon antiquus falconi BUSK. Other animals were found by this excavation but at deeper points were deer that disappeared before the elephants reached the island. Bones of tortoises, microtubes, as well as fragments of tusks that may have been used as tools have been found.
These finds date back to 8000-7000 BC and are located in the Palaeontological Museum.
